Remodel a Kitchen

We’ve all heard that kitchens and baths sell houses. While that is probably true, maybe we don’t want to sell our house. Maybe we want to remodel the kitchen of the home that we want to live in.

This may be the best renovation that we can do. We are remodeling our kitchen for ourselves. I think this may be the best dream come true.

As with most remodels, first you have to decide what you can do yourself, and what you will need a contractor to do for you.

First things first, what do you want to do? Do you have to reconfigure the entire kitchen? Give this a lot of thought before you start the job.

As you move around your kitchen preparing meals, note what is inconvenient about the current layout. What would make preparation easier for you.

Do you need more counter space? Do you need more cabinets? What about an island? Would that work in your kitchen? Do you have room for an island in your kitchen?

Make a list of things that you want to change. Make a sketch of what you would like your kitchen to look like. It doesn’t have to be to scale. You don’t have to be an architect, just a basic sketch of where things should be to making working in there the most convenient.

Measure your kitchen, and decide if you have room to make the changes that you would like to make. Something as simple as moving the stove or refrigerator can change the entire flow of the kitchen.

Each walk path needs to be about three feet wide. If you are considering an island, place something as simple as a box or cardboard cutout to represent the island. Live with it for a few days. Walking around the cardboard to get the feel of having an island in the middle of your kitchen.

If you decide you want an island, you will have to decide how big of an island you want. Also if your kitchen is small, will an island really be worth the space it will take.
