Hiring a Contractor
When planning a remodel there will probably be things you won’t be able to do yourself. This means you will need to hire someone to do the work.
First know exactly what it is that you want to do. If you don’t know all that the job will entail. Go to the local home improvement store. Ask someone there exactly what will need to be done.
Once you know what the job requires, you will have an idea what the job should cost.
Now you need to ask friends, relatives or neighbors, who have had dealings with contractors recently. They can tell you who they had do their work. whether they did a good job, and if they charged a reasonable price.
Try to find two or three different contractors to give you bids on the job that you want to have done. This might be difficult. Depending on if you live in a big city or in a more rural area.
Make sure that each bid is for the same job. Of course it is wise to get the bids in writing. Not all contractors want to be bothered writing up bids. So try to have the job written down so you are sure you are getting bids on the same job from each one.
Do ask for references from the contractors. Make sure they are licensed and insured.
If they come into your home and don’t do the job you hired them for, or if they break something. Their insurance will cover any damages.
You might want to check with your local Better Business Bureau to see if the contractor you are about to hire has any complaints against them. One or two complaints might be okay. Sometimes there are small issues. If there is more than a couple of complaints, you might want to rethink your choice of contractors.
