Low Cost Garage Decorating

No matter what part of the world you live in, having a garage is great. You can do so much with the space. It doesn’t have to be just for parking your vehicles.

In colder climates, people wouldn’t think about using the garage for anything other than parking their vehicles. If you have long cold snowy winters. Having a garage is more a necessity than just something nice to have.

In warmer climates, people have no idea how important a garage is to people in cold climates.

Many people in warm climates think nothing of parking their vehicles outside so they can cram all the over flow from the house into the garage.

To start you need to sort through all that stuff in your garage. Make 3 separate piles. 1, things you need to keep. 2, things to throw away.  3, things to sell or giveaway.  You will be surprised how much stuff you will find that you know you will never use again, so why keep it.

Now that the garage is pretty much empty, this would be a good time to clean it. A broom or duster with a paper towel wrapped around it, is great for getting the cobwebs out of corners.

Hosing down the floor is usually a great way to get the floor clean. Once it’s clean you can decide if you need to paint it.

While the garage is empty, is a good time to decide if you need to update lighting. If you plan to use any part of the garage for working on any projects, garage lighting is pretty important. While you don’t need anything fancy, (it is a garage) you do need to have enough light to see what you are doing when working on any project.

Look over the garage interior, and decide how much room you will have once the vehicles are in the garage. Do you need a work bench? What about storage cabinets?  How about hooks to hang bicycles.

Remember all that stuff you just dragged out of the garage, some of that stuff will need to go back in there. So while the garage interior is empty, it’s a good time to plan, where you will put storage cabinets, and a workbench.

You don’t need to go top of the line for storage cabinets. You can often find used cabinets at second hand stores, that might only need a fresh coat of paint to make them look nice.

The workbench will get a lot of use so make sure it’s a sturdy bench. You can purchase a work bench, or buy lumber and build your own. Another consideration is, pegboard. Most of us have a lot of tools for things around the house. Hanging a sheet of pegboard above the workbench will help keep things in easy reach.

You might want to trace your tools with a black marker so everyone knows where to put each tool when they are done with it. A light above the workbench will help with any project you are working on.

Once you have all the tools hung, and the storage cabinets neatly arranged, stand back and enjoy it. You know that soon it will be full to overflowing again.
